USA Shooting

This summer, 22 athletes will represent Team USA in the three Olympic-shooting disciplines of pistol, rifle and shotgun. If 2011 was any indication, the USA Shooting Team is poised for great success having made 40 appearances in 2011 World Cup finals, earning 24 medals overall. The U.S. earned six medals in Beijing at the 2008 Olympic Games and is on track to equal or better that mark in London.

Two of the names you should be familiar with.

Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) is a four-time Olympic medalist in shotgun. Having already secured a berth on Team USA for London, she’s poised to become the first U.S. athlete to win five medals in five consecutive Olympic Games and cementing her as one of the iconic female Olympians of all time.

Matt Emmons (Browns Mill, N.J.) is a 2004 & 2008 Olympic medalist and is considered one of the top rifle shooters in the world. Emmons has had some unfortunate circumstances arise in Olympic competition that have prevented him from reaping true medal success. However, a low point at the 2004 Olympic Games lead him to meeting his wife, Katie, a national team shooter for the Czech Republic, who is also a three-time Olympic medalist. Matt also had to overcome thyroid cancer in recent years but is on track for more medal success in 2012. Matt is an avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast and is an excellent cross country skier.

David Tubb demonstrates how a good marksman shoots a rifle:

Notice his eye stays open as the shots break and there is no negative reaction at discharge. Set up a video camera/camcorder and check that you are doing likewise.

So, your hero tactical “instructor” is a hard core military type with deployments overseas, huh? Well, isn’t that cute. I wonder how his shooting skill would stack up against a teenage girl.
