John, You nailed it again. I have spent way too much time trying to explain these maladies to my son Carl. It works for a week then we are off on a tangent again. If it is on Sniper’s Hide it must be right. Right!

That’s why we find competition shooting to be so useful. The requirement to measure and prove what you think you know and understand on an on going basis eliminates most silly BS.

Too bad too many people’s self-confidence/self-image is so fragile they won’t risk it by showing up. Sometimes even showing up to watch will scare them away from participating. The only way I know of to get around this is to take someone out for one of my practice sessions and get them running the same drills I do, then (over time and repeated trips) coach them to a passable performance. I’ll slowly include in the particular sport range commands, timing device, etc. I get them doing the essentials of the sport (highpower, USPSA, whatever) up to basic competency, without their even knowing it. Then I tell them that they’re ready to compete and turn in a performance they’ll be proud of.

Illiterates can never learn to read until they’re willing to open their first book. It’s more difficult when illiteracy is the norm.
