Here is a man with his priorities well in order:
Current Marksmanship Goals
These are my current shooting goals. They will evolve over time I need to set smaller intermediate goals, or as I meet or exceed the established goals. Completed goals are listed at the bottom.
- In fewer than seven seconds, regardless of weather or terrain conditions, place a first round hit on any stationary eight-inch target at any range up to 200 meters from any unsupported field position using a rifle equipped with iron sights or telescopic sight and a rifle sling.
- In fewer than five seconds, regardless of weather or terrain conditions, place a first round hit on any stationary six-inch target at any range up to 300 meters from any supported position in any weather condition using a rifle equipped with a telescopic sight.
- Win at least two of the monthly rifle competitions held at my local gun club
If only more gun owners were like this…

The term “any unsupported field position” is used. I don’t understand the “any.” I thought an “unsupported position” meant offhand.
“Supported” would mean kneeling, sitting or prone … or of course … off some type of rest.

I take “unsupported” here to mean without any external support, such as a bench, sandbag, tree, shooting sticks, etc. Use only your body to hold the rifle to make the hit. “Any” here is whatever you like, provided it’s just you and your rifle.

Me, I tend to include the use of the loop sling in that definition, b/c all my rifles happen to have one….

Yes, I prefer to “cheat” like that as well. :)

Thanks. I’ve never heard “unsupported” used that way.

Army qualifications differentiate between prone supported (sandbag allowed) and prone unsupported. Marines might sneer but their Table 1 course allows a full loop sling in all positions except standing.
Of course, one could correctly argue that anything except offhand is supported. I suspect the original author meant “any field position excluding external support” and abbreviated that by saying “unsupported.”

John is correct. By “any unsupported position” I mean the lack of external support like bipod, sandbag, bench, or anything else I can rest the rifle on that isn’t my hand. A sling is acceptable for my goals here.
