Do you have a problem with that?
– No, Sensei.
No mercy.
I guess all that tactical lath shooting advocated by the Turnipseed folks was spot on after all!
When a standard kinetic response to a threat is not yielding a positive effect on target, SOP should be to utilize the Sweep the Leg Drill. Moving from conventional gravity zones to the legs immobilizes the target, allowing for a cascading system failure of the threat’s combat chassis.
With mobility exploitation of the target, follow up evaluation becomes easier for ballistic tasking.
Depending on operator’s munitions platform, ordinance delivery system, and battle operations spectrum- the Sweep the Leg Drill can be augmented with a maximum impact combatives package.

This is the perfect example of 2D Range and competition type techniques and it will get you killed in short order. First, standing up-right and not moving while delivering fire will get you killed. Bad Guys do not stand still: Combat is extremely fluid, fast and dynamic with the circumstances changing rapidly. Also, in a moving gun battle, shooting for the legs and head might be impossible. The demonstrator should try this on either a moving target or a robotic target as theories vanish on moving targets. Better yet, scenarios using AirSoft would show errors rather quickly. If possible, seek good cover and/or go prone when engaging the Bad Guy. You may not see any effect your bullets are making or you maybe missing…but continue…I just hope that guy did not burn out his barrel. Ted A Sames II, SISSTRAINING.COM

The demonstrators in the video should employ more angry moving.

Those guys are really funny. Great spoof.
On the other hand, an actual leg sweep was one technique I never really got the hang of. Not quick enough I guess.

Dear Chris Rhines: Several SISS students brought this video to my attention and I just wanted to clear the air. A couple of the students did no believe it was a spoof and it left doubt in many minds. I have seen many many training films–some attempting to inject humor and mostly, they left doubt. In real US police shootings, there is only 18 to 20% hit ratio against the Bad Guy from within 12 feet away. These are bad stats from seasoned and trained cops mostly from LAPD and NYPD. I can only imagine the poor percentage from citizens. In a real street confrontation, it is good just to get 1 hit on the adversary. Confrontations are usually bush-whacks and are quick, vicious and deadly for the cop or citizen. Usually, the Good Guy is behind the curve already…reacting to the BG’s attack. If paying students of tactical training (or at least your students) can’t tell the difference between a serious training video/demo and an obvious spoof, that is indicative of some of the problems with open enrollment tactical training. I guess the Karate Kid reference and the video being tagged under the “Humor” category didn’t help either.
A lack of situational awareness will get you killed on the street.

Some time ago, I received an email from a guy claiming that a single, agreed-upon, nation-wide stat on this would be impossible because few agencies even bother to release such info.
So… very few agencies publish stats but, somehow, there is an accepted “US Police stat” (whatever that is…)
I think “agreed upon” here means “numbers/facts based on nothing that we continue to restate often enough until they become accepted as truth.”

There are many levels of understanding among students of self-defense. God bless them that they are trying to understand the issues and dynamics that are involved. As for the stats: These come directly from the FBI from credible reports from local, state agencies. The operant word is STRESS…strange things happen under the effects of extreme stress during a life and death battle. Here’s a personal story from my dad, a WW II combat veteran: He took me aside and told me that “even real men do0-doo their pants during combat…I doo-dooed my pants during a Banzai charge…”. We now understand this and it is routine to give SWAT members time to release before a mission or room entry. Years ago, it may have been thought that is was un-manly to soil one’s pants but now we know that it’s the body gearing up–becoming lighter–for battle. Ted A Sames II, SISSTRAINING.COM

You should write this up and provide a copy of these report(s). As with NYPD and LAPD reports, this could be informative.

And different approaches. I’d also be very interested in a break down of a SISS class with specific examples of how you evaluate student and instructor skill and/or effectiveness.

I keep files on findings of John Veit and from your own Firearm User Network. Much thanks is given in providing good information and dialogue between students and instructors. I am in agreement that students should know where they stack up regarding their expertise-to a point. SISS was never meant to be a “tactical competition training school” but one born from practical experience from 30+ years in the military and law enforcement. I believe that we may lose our practicality once we start counting bullet holes and calculating scores. Remember and keep in mind that the US L/E hit ratio against the Bad Guy is a mere 18 to 20% hit ratio from 12 feet or so. The Bad Guy’s hit ratio against the L/E is only slightly worst. I believe that STRESS is the most important factor in who lives and who dies in the “fog of war”. The person that can work through the chaos is usually the winner. Specifically, the ability to achieve excellent trigger control during those life and death situations. The SISS Series 100 Precision Pistol (or rifle) should be retitled to Trigger Control 101: We blueprint the trigger pull along with proper stance. The students are required to “clover leaf” their shots into a 1/4″ bullseye at 3 yards and sometimes 5 yards depending on the range. From there, they shoot the staples out of the paper target. This is pinpoint accuracy at its finest. Unless there is a physical problem, all students have accomplished this criteria. I stress PRECISION and have them load only one “golden” round at a time in the magazine during this training. At the same time, they learn pistol manipulation and safety. No stress is administered in Series 100 classes. Series 200 is pistol training you would find at any police academy. If the students are good, we do not bore them but go on further in the focus on speed. Series 300 is specifically, the Israeli Instinctive Shooting Method. It is purposely made to be stressful and fast. A 3 yard shoot from the holster test is given and recorded before the class starts and afterwards to show improvement and how the Israeli Method is superior. There is PT and many more physical drills involved. Sometimes, we may add AirSoft Combatives or Groundfighting.scenarios. I am in the process of rewarding Maxpedition patches in just 3 different colors until I have made SISS red triangle logo patches in the near future. Ronin Combat Strategies has to be thanked for this idea and getting the ball rolling in this regard. I modified their rankings but made it tougher with less rankings at only 3. The first order in the pistol drill–3 yards from the holster–is .58 to 1 second. The 2nd order is 1.0 to 1.5 and the 3rd order is 1.5 to 2.0 seconds. Rifle is similar in set-up. We use no scoring rings but just torso hits are counted. They are given 5 attempts to better their time. As in real life, the winner is usually the one who places the first round into the torso before the other adversary. Ted A Sames II, SISSTRAINING.COM
