What I continue to find amusing is how that B-Mod barndoor rewards hits for missing the entire humanoid silhouette, and “Expert” qualification from the Marine Corps can be achieved by missing over half the full-size silhouettes on Table One, yet Marines (at least those lacking competitive shooting experience) continue to delude themselves into thinking they’re GTG for first round esophagus hits at 500 meters….

Very true, though it’s easy to see the National Match Course influence. A review of the history provided by WTBN is illuminating. As with the Army, changes to the USMC qualification has reduced the challenge and skill needed over the years. Where competitions often get more difficult over time, qualification continues to get easier. The USMC qualification program from 1912-1942 featured a three-tiered course increasing in difficulty, with shooting done at further distances and faster target exposures. Standards gradually reduced from there. The newest revision in 2007 added a close range course (Table Two) which is useful but actually made the qualification standard easier to achieve. Most military and police qualification programs have done the same thing.

Not mentioned in this history is the USMC competitive program. Here’s information from their 2015 Division Matches:
