I would LOVE to shoot stages with surprise layouts. I shoot IDPA, and I like it. Do I love it? No. Recent rule changes have veered away from the Defensive aspect, but it’s still a lot of fun. Being able to dissect a stage before shooting it, though, seems unrealistic for defensive training purposes.

The IDPA rulebook explicitly forbids surprise layouts. As you point out, this is not ideal, however, events like this are still a net benefit.
