Very good! You always give us good wisdom on these kinds controversies…I gave you a thumbs up in LINKEDIN…..
magazines, too many cartridges in the magazines and torn out extractors and springs are usually the culprits. Incorrect lube or the wrong type is another issue. Using a dry lube is the worst lube for ARs….
there was a Reserve Colonel and Investigator that I knew that used dry lubes and told his troops to use it. He suffered many malfunctions. I begged him to let me use 4 drops of LSA in the sensitive spots…
PRESTO-CHANGEO, it worked perfectly. The military manuals say a heavy coat but not dripping is the best description of how much should be placed in the critical areas. Ted A Sames II, SISS

OH! I made copies of all these articles. I do believe lube on ARs and M4s is a little more critical than he claims but I do believe him and his tests. The first thing I ask: Let me see your magazines….what type of lube are you using…I check to see evidence of lube…then, using my calibrated forefinger, I attempt to pull the extractor from the bolt head. Bushmaster (at one time) drilled the extractor spring too shallow but usually too deep and caused poor performance. If they can’t drill a hole to its proper depth then, I really do not trust their quality control. They might have corrected this by now. The ones that I saw at the SO in the early 2000s had this problem….polymer receiver-ed ARs were also worthless….TED

I’ve found ARs to be very reliable when given a bit of lube and maintenance.
The thing I don’t understand about the “only works on the range, but not in combat” claims is, what range are these folks using that is so white-room clean? Every range I’ve used for training and matches had plenty of dirt and weather and we shoot MUCH more ammo there. Wipe and lube the thing before you plan to use it and it’ll work.

Proper maintenance equals proper functioning.
Why is there a “bolt assist.”

It does the same thing as slapping the op rod/handle on M1 Garand, M1A, M14, Kalashnikov, SKS, AR-18 and a host of others.
With proper maintenance and functioning it isn’t needed.
