Palmetto State Armory (PSA) makes really affordable guns. And, they’re one of the few American manufacturers that makes AK-47 rifles. But, are Palmetto State Armory rifles any good?
Sign up for our free weekly newsletter for more reviews.
There’s been some dissent around the internet about whether or not Palmetto State Armory makes reliable rifles. Who’s right? The fans or the haters?
The truth is somewhere in between. There are pros and cons to buying firearms from Palmetto State Armory. Here’s what you can expect.
Pro: great deals
If you head over to their site, you’ll notice that they have lots of daily sales and limited time discounts. So, there’s plenty of opportunities to get gear at great prices from PSA.
They’re also very selective about what they put on sale. Most models and products that are on sale are in stock in their warehouse. So sale items ship quickly. That may not be the case with every order (but we’ll get to that shortly).
Also, the Palmetto State Armory components and rifles are really well priced. You can get complete PSA rifles for around $500, which is a legitimate deal.
But, if the prices make you skeptical…
Pro: excellent quality
Palmetto State Armory does make some of their own components. However, many of their parts are sourced from other manufacturers.
The third-party components are usually unmarked. But they buy rifle parts from manufacturers like FN Herstal, Midwest Industries, and other companies.
Palmetto State Armory uses bulk pricing to reduce their manufacturing costs and offer better prices to their customers. If you’re concerned that the price looks a bit too low for quality components, worry not. They’re not cutting corners.
In fact, a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 was one of the first AR-15s to pass the AK Operators Union 5000 round torture test. And, it was one of the most basic PSA AR-15s.
That’s not to say that you’ll never have a problem with a Palmetto State Armory rifle. But, any issues are probably anomalies, not the standard.
But, if you do have a problem…
Pro: solid customer service
So far, reports from the field say that Palmetto State Armory’s customer service has been top notch. [Addendum: some customers report otherwise. See comments below.]
Whenever there’s a problem, the company has never hesitated to replace parts and send them in a hurry. Most of the time, customers aren’t even asked to send the defective part back.
The company certainly stands behind their products. And, will make things right if you have a problem.
There are some legitimate complaints about the customer service, though.
Sign up for our free weekly newsletter for more reviews.
Con: slow customer service
Although the customer service is excellent once you get in touch with them, Palmetto State Armory isn’t a huge company. And, it can take some time to get on the phone with a customer service representative.
Some PSA buyers have recommended using the vendor contact page on AR15.com.
The slow customer service is likely a byproduct of the time that they take with each customer. It helps to remember that if you find yourself aggravated by the slow response time.
Con: slow shipping
For most of the daily deals, things go out pretty quickly. And, customers have gotten their gear within a few days.
However, most buyers have noted that, if you order on a Monday, you won’t get your stuff by the weekend. It usually takes five days or more for Palmetto State Armory orders to arrive.
The shipping time isn’t unreasonable. But, if you need your stuff fast, you may have to get it somewhere else, or pay for the quick shipping.
Con: fairly basic rifles
This is only a con for those who want a really sweet rifle right out of the box. But, the complete PSA rifles are fairly simple models. They’re effective, to be sure.
However, they don’t come with a ton of bells and whistles. Most PSA rifles are essentially mil-spec rifles with a few upgrades. Most of the base models are equipped with A2 pistol grips and mil-spec M4 stocks.
So, there are plenty of reasons to upgrade a few bolt on parts, if you get one of the PSA budget rifles.
But, if you want something that’s a little more high end right out of the box, Palmetto State Armory does offer a few models with stainless steel barrels and Magpul MOE furniture. They’re not super custom rifles like you might get from a company like LWRC or Daniel Defense. But, the more expensive PSA rifles are still capable guns.
There’s a range of options. But, the overall trend is that Palmetto State Armory generally makes affordable, reliable rifles, not super custom rifles.
[Addendum] Con: Customer Service Issues
See comments below. Some readers report having customer service issues with Palmetto State Armory’s customer service. Contact their Customer service at 803/724-6950 or https://palmettostatearmory.com/help-center or https://palmettostatearmory.com/
Conclusion
You may have noticed that none of the cons are related to product quality. That’s because PSA guns are well-made. Quality isn’t an issue.
Many Palmetto State Armory rifles are fairly basic models. So, PSA rifles may not be for everyone. But, you could easily use a Palmetto State Armory rifle as a foundation for building a super tactical rifle. And, it would be a cost efficient method.
In the end, the complaints about Palmetto State Armory are probably overblown. And, the PSA superfans may be exaggerating how awesome Palmetto State Armory rifles are. But, if you buy a rifle from Palmetto State Armory, you’ll get a quality firearm. You may not get it quickly. But, you’ll be happy with it once it arrives.

I have built 5 psa riflekits and every one has been great from the start…and fit and function are what you get. I think they are just as good a quility as a factory assembled colt rifle from back in the pre 1994 days…and then go from there…to add accessories as needed…bang for the buck is the motto…the guns i have shoot better than most can shoot.

Their customer service isn’t bad if you can reach them. I’m seriously doubting the competence of their repair people. I have an AR-10 that was giving me problems out of the box. The bolt would not close completely and I would have to pry the bolt back to get it to release the round. I sent it in and the replaced the buffer spring. It came back snd when I loads a round into it, the same thing happened. I sent it back a second time and this time they discover a Bolt out of SPECS and worn out gas rings. They still haven’t told me how gas rings will wear out with less than 100 rounds through the weapon. I have other AR’s and have yet to wear out gas rings with 500+ Through them. Their quality control sadly jacks. If they had been aviation quality control, they’d be out on the street or flipping burgers.

Long story short I ordered a sig P365 tac-pac (Weapon, holster, 3 (12) round magazines) and had it shipped to a FFL dealer in NJ, Palmetto removed the 3 magazines from the box before they shipped It and never notified me that they would remove it because of state restrictions. I am authorized to carry extended magazines because I am a LEO. I have ordered restricted items before from other companies and they always have a upload link where you can upload your ID or they ask them you email it to them for clearance. Palmetto never informed me that they would remove it nor did they make any effort to contact me to verify my credentials but instead chose to charge me the entire amount for “half” the product. When I contacted palmetto they want a copy of my work ID which is perfectly fine but they want a department letter stating I’m allowed to have it. It’s not a department policy, I’m allowed to carry as per the state of New Jersey so why would I go out of my way to bother my superiors for a letter when it should be required? They refused to refund me the difference or give a suitable replacement like 3 10 round magazines in its place….instead they sent me a gun with zero magazines and I essentially paid a tac-pac price and got a base model. Obviously ridiculous and borderline scam.

I have and they are resistant to any type of proper resolution. I have contacted the BBB and the Local AG informing them of company and how they steal and resell items you paid for. I left this comment in hopes of informing people of how this company does business so that they don’t run into the same issue.

Best bang for your buck IMHO (pardon the pun). Got a deal of the day email and couldn’t resist, a complete rifle for only $499.00! Shipping was $16.00 and I found an FFL dealer who only charges $20.00 for the transfer, so $536.00 total. Holy moly there practically giving them away. I have owned dozens of AR15’s over the years and the fit, finish, and function of this PSA is as good or better as the original Colts, or any of the other much more expensive AR’s I’ve owned.

Palmetto only cares about pushing crap and getting the money in their bank account. Buyer Beware, you better love what you order from them and know you aren’t going to change your mind because their so called return policy is charge you as much in return shipping and restocking fees as possible! I WILL NEVER BUY FROM PALMETTO AGAIN!!! Keep in mind, I purchased many things from Palmetto in the past, I’m not a tire kicker.

I no longer buy from PSA, as they would not recognize or accept official credentials or email from DHS/ICE as LEO for purchase of 30 round AR magazine. Found better deal with no hassles on Midway USA.

I have several of their items, all high quality, moderate price. Can’t be beat.
I recently had an issue with an upper, I contacted them for a repair, was on the phone only a few minutes, and from the time I sent the upper back to them, until I received it back, was less than a week. GREAT customer service.

I think Covid must have hit their business pretty hard–probably the labor shortage. Today is March 3rd and I ordered a scope on Feb 15 and it has not shipped yet. Not sure what’s going on, but I’ve sent three emails to them and not received a single response. The email were sent over a period of about 5 days I think. Now I’m just worried about losing my money. When you don’t hear back you tend tend to fear the worst. Been doing business with them since 2017, and they have always been great so I’m willing to give them a break. Hope things improve there.

Non-responses by email are not good, however, I remember when 6-8 week delivery times by mail order was normal. I have not heard any reason to be concerned about PSA dissolution. Hopefully, this is just a temporary slow down.

Second request to cancel. No one seems care, no one answers the phone (on hold for 20 minutes twice today) no one answers the “chat” box, that states to use for “fastest response” no less. Tried that several times on multiple occasions. My case number is 01197374 submitted on 9/6 (15 days after placing order with no updates or shipping, web site states up to 10 days to ship). It has been 9 days since then with no response (message says usually 1 day but may be up to 3 days to respond) When I try to call I am placed on forever hold and again, why push the chat option if it is ignored. They have already charged my credit card for something they never shipped and can’t seem to provide an update for. I chose a pre-approved FFL from their list, I don’t understand how this is acceptable or how their message can even say they care about their customers.

I waited 48 minutes to ask customer service a simple question. While listening to a god awful violin playing over and over the same garish notes. Not to mention that the intro voice recording berated everybody because they didn’t follow the instructions. Wow times have changed. I’m fanned near scared to ever have to call again.

I am looking forward to giving PSA some business soon. I just hope that either their “policy” regarding order confirmation has changed. I was told by a customer service lady there that “If you didn’t get an order confirmation, I can’t send another”! WTF. Maybe the lady was just having a bad day, but I have NEVER had this happen before with ANY online order from ANY other company.

I was very impressed with their products and services so far. The shipping was actually fast for the upper I ordered. I ordered it on a Thursday morning before heading to work so before their start of business that day and I received my order four days later on Monday evening. I have purchased many things from PSA over the last year or so, including complete firearms. Twice I contacted customer service and yes, while the holding music is awful, I was responded to within a reasonable amount of time. Further, my issue(s) were quickly resolved. Delivery usually takes around five days. Overall I am satisfied and will continue to buy from PSA in the future.

Palmetto State Armory firearms are garbage. They can’t hold a tolerance in the manufacturing operations. Customer service is even worse. They had my lower for 4 months and did nothing. Mags are loose. Buyer beware. Also they won’t post a bad review on their website hence. Spend your hard earned money with a better company
