Rob Leatham shares his thoughts on the best way to better promote shooting.
Where we need to see activity is at the local level. The Nationals matter less than the club participation. Anything that gets shooters into that makes no difference. Mission count will be the most important way of measuring the success.

Yes, but our current shooting organizations won’t like it. The NRA almost seems opposed.
We need to emphasize more activity at the local level as national-level events matter less than the club participation.
We have plenty of gun owners but not enough participating marksmen. Most gun owners, to say nothing of the general public, are ignorant of this. Some even concoct excuses to justify their ignorance.
To bolster this drive, promote shooting like any other sport. Make it a point to make sure every local club is equally supported with administration and promotional services.
Every affiliated club/shooting group needs:
– a current website, complete with updated upcoming events calendars
– contact list to sign up and notify interested people
– issue TWO press releases per event to local media
– handle scoring and post event results immediately upon event conclusion
All these services should be provided by the hosting national level organization the club/group is affiliated with.
As it is, clubs are left to their own. Any admin or marketing effort is left to the club with no help from the national organization. Membership, classification and affiliation fees are essentially a tax paid in to national headquarters with no real service provided.
Until this changes, shooting clubs will continue to flounder unassisted and golf courses will continue to attract more participation.
